Street poles for efficient street lighting:
Marina di Ragusa waterfront

The Municipality of Ragusa has been working on the modernisation of public lighting in Marina di Ragusa for some time. The public lighting with streetlamps is only one part within a larger and more important project. In these years, in fact, work has been done to make the touristic area of the marina more liveable and functional.

A city rich in history and charm, with a baroque heart and a key point for tourism in the summer months, where the city streets come alive and become an important place for socialising. It is precisely from this need for sociality and liveability that the urban redevelopment project for certain areas, such as the Andrea Doria seafront in the tract from Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi to Piazza Malta and from Piazza Malta to the tourist port, one of Sicily's main ones, has come to life.

It is precisely in these areas that some of the main attractions are located. Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi is the beating heart of Marina di Ragusa. Here stands Torre Cabrera, located on the south side and fronting the Andrea Doria promenade. It is a watchtower dating back to the 16th century, the walls of the base of which are visible today.

The Andrea Doria promenade, which is the subject of major redevelopment, includes a pedestrian cycle path more than 2 km long, a row of palm trees, and a succession of bars, restaurants, and clubs. The promenade directly overlooks the golden free and equipped beaches.

At the end of the Andrea Doria street is the new and elegant marina, with boats of all kinds and beautiful Art Nouveau villas.

Public lighting and street city lights

For a project of this importance, the choice was made to use lamps that were highly resistant and that would best integrate into the historical context, not altering the style, but harmonising the elements, illuminating them in a skilful and functional manner.

For the lighting of the Andrea Doria promenade and Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi in Marina di Ragusa, it was decided to use electro-polished stainless steel light poles from the MOON line in the 3000K version. The warm colour of the light matches the surrounding materials such as limestone and lava stone of the paving and the seats covered with limestone slabs and steel and teak wood backrests.

Stainless steel street furniture for waterfront areas

The importance of choosing poles for street furniture made of stainless steel, especially AISI 316L, is of the first order in seafront developments. In these contexts, in fact, the aggressiveness of atmospheric agents such as saltiness and UV rays tends to quickly wear out materials such as aluminium. Stainless steel is a highly resistant material guaranteed against passing corrosion. Only routine maintenance and cleaning will be required for stainless steel poles to enable the luminaires to last a long time. The maintenance of public lighting is in fact a very important issue that must be considered when selecting luminaires for projects. In this way we will not have public areas looking neglected a few months after installation.

Street poles for efficient lighting in public spaces

LED streetlights provide a high level of visual comfort that is combined with the luminaires' resistance to the aggressiveness of a highly saline environment, with the possibility of keeping energy consumption and future maintenance as low as possible. Public lighting poles are an important element of street furniture in both evening and daytime hours, as an element in harmony with the context. For night hours, on the other hand, energy saving, safety and visual comfort are important. Illuminating walkways from above with asymmetrical optics provides diffuse, non-disturbing, and well-directed light downwards.
